Center for Electronic and Computer Music
Established in 1966 for the purpose of theoretical training, electronic and multi-media composition, and the dissemination of works through public concerts, the Center for Electronic and ComputerMusic today houses two studios which employ the latest technologies in digital sound synthesis and sampling, MIDI, digital recording and editing, video, and research-level computing. The curriculum provides an extensive technical training and historical background for students with little or no previous experience. More advanced students may enroll to use the studio facilities for the production of compositions and multi-media works, as well as for research. The program may serve as a minor for the Doctor ofMusic degree in composition, as well as a cognate area for the Master of Music degree.
Dean's Prize Composition Contest
Each year the Dean of the School of Music offers prizes for outstanding new orchestral, chamber and electroacoustic compositions. The winners are selected by a jury appointed by the Dean, from works submitted by IU composition students. Deadline: Monday after Spring Break.
Georgina Joshi Composition Commission Prize
A prize is awarded to an outstanding composition for solo voice and instrumental ensemble to be performed by the IU New Music Ensemble. The winner is selected by the Composition Faculty, from works submitted by IU composition students. Deadline: Monday after Spring Break.
Elementary School children from grades two through six are invited to submit original melodies that fit on one page and are less than one minute in length. Students invent a melody and learn the simple tools needed to get it written in musical form. IU Jacobs School of Music composition students will turn the melodies selected by a panel into orchestra or band compositions. The selections will be performed to over 1,600 local 3rd and 5th grade elementary students who visit the Musical Arts Center each school year for youth concerts given by IU Jacobs School of Music ensembles. Deadline: Oct. 1.
Kuttner Quartet Composition Contest
All IU composers are invited to submit scores written during the student's residency at IU for performance consideration by the Kuttner String Quartet. Deadline: Oct. 1.
The Composition Department participates in theMidwest Composers' Symposium, an annual two-day concert series of music by selected student composers at Indiana University, the universities of Illinois, Iowa, Michigan, and Oberlin College. Each year the Symposium is held on the campus of a different member school. Deadlines: Oct. 1, Nov. 1
This student ensemble operates under the aegis of the Composition Department and presents the music of recent decades in four concerts each year on the Bloomington campus. Recent tours have taken them to New York City, Philadelphia, Seattle, Portland, San Francisco, Los Angles and to other college campuses in Indiana, Kentucky and Illinois. Composition majors who are also strong performers frequently join this ensemble. Auditions are usually held the first day of fall semester for piano and strings. Percussion and winds are assigned by the performance faculty through the regular orchestra auditions.
Reading Sessions
Band: as needed. Ask your teacher to contact the Director of Bands if you have a work to be read.
New Music Ensemble: usually once a semester, or at ad hoc time. Contact the Director for more info.
