  WHAT'S A PORTFOLIO?
A dialogue between a career advisor and a (real) student:

ON PORTFOLIOS

Advisor: So what do you want to know about portfolios?

Student: Everything You Wanted To Know About Building Your Portfolio But Were Afraid To Ask?

Advisor: LOL

Student: Okay, I guess a portfolio should include a CV, statement of teaching philosophy, and syllabi for courses you’ve taught or could teach.

Advisor: Okay, so you’re only preparing for teaching positions?

Student: Oh, I assumed this was a “teaching portfolio.” I have no idea what a portfolio outside that context entails! Aren’t other jobs just – “provide a résumé and that’s it?” The only other kinds of portfolios I can think of are for modeling, photography, and perhaps other visual arts.

Advisor: Portfolios are for all sorts of jobs, both in the creative world and beyond it. In the creative world, they include the various art forms people create, but beyond it they include the different skills that a person could bring to the world as a consultant, collaborator, colleague, or creator. As an example, some musicians have multiple skillsets – like a performer who also teaches in a private studio, or a performer who also coordinates events. Other people run ensembles, make films, publish, create in other art forms, or work for or run community organizations and more.

When we want to learn about someone – for research purposes, for job searches, or really, anything! The first thing we do these days is Google them. Who’s in control of what people learn about us? What do we want to communicate to them? A good portfolio brings together the different elements of our professional lives in a way that lets us communicate effectively. For some people that means having a website, but for others it can be a combination of a LinkedIn profile, a Facebook page for their art form, a YouTube channel, a blog… the list is endless. The point is that a portfolio is a collection of items that communicates our personal mission through our professional identities in a way that helps us find our peers, employers, and collaborators.
