DESIGN THINKING Workshop

Saturday, Sept. 15 | 1-5pm | Musical Arts Center, MC066

Organizations and creative practices have been shaken to their foundations by startups that seem to spring up out of nowhere. HOW ARE THEY DOING IT? WITH DESIGN!

As part of the (R)evolution of Steve Jobs weekend, we're sponsoring a unique opportunity for you to learn about Design Thinking and then practice the technique with the following challenge:

How can we significantly enhance the audience experience of an opera performance? Is it possible to create an application that will allow a user to appreciate and understand an opera from perspectives other than from the real-time traditional view of sitting in the auditorium?

No design skills are required to participate (JUST GREAT IDEAS!). You will be taught the design thinking process as you work through the design challenge.

Leading the workshop will be Marty Siegel, Professor of Informatics, Cognitive Science, and Education. He teaches design thinking to undergraduate and graduate students at IU. Assisting him in the workshop will be several of his graduate students.

Students from music and other fields who wish to learn this innovative process and play it out with a fun design challenge are invited!

A Performance Workshop with the SPIRO QUARTET

Thursday, Sept 27 | 11am-12:15pm | Recital Hall Stage

Members of UK contemporary acoustic string ensemble, Spiro, will perform at the Lotus Festival. Before doing so, they'll offer an insight into their riviting arrangements, which expertly weave together traditional and contemporary styles. A collaboration with the Lotus World Music and Arts Festival.

Beyond the horizon of English traditional folk music you’ll find Spiro. The band’s raw, punk-infused take on folk and string music is propelled by the fierce and joyous interplay of violinist and composer Jane Harbour, mandolinist Alex Vann, guitarist Jon Hunt, and accordionist Jason Sparkes. For fans of English traditional music, Spiro will sound both familiar and strange: melodies of classical heft vie with driving rhythmic riffs of unusual beauty. Their performances are cinematic, and exciting. Spiro’s recording projects feature intricate arrangements that have been meticulously worked out in advance, and their albums are recorded as live performances, with no overdubs or multi-tracking. Jane Harbour says, “We are like watch-makers who have made an intricate machine. You just wind it up and let it go.” Don’t miss your chance to meet these incredible international artists!

Socalled + Kuttner, An Open Rehearsal

Friday, Sept. 28 | 3:30-6:30pm | Location, Merrill Hall, MU204
A Collaboration with the 2018 Lotus World Music & Arts Festival.

Go behind the scenes of the collaboration between Jacobs students and Canadian Yiddish/Beat musician “Socalled."

Genre-defying maestro Josh “Socalled” Dolgin is a musician, producer, composer, arranger, magician, filmmaker, photographer, and visual artist based in Montreal. Socalled grew up taking piano lessons and loving funk and hip hop; when he first heard klezmer music on an old Yiddish record, he was fascinated by the cool sounds he could sample to make hip hop beats. Then, he realized that integrating this Jewish music from the 1930s into his songs was a way of representing himself and his cultural heritage. It enabled him to bring something of his own to funk and hip hop, giving him what he calls “a real reason to make music.” At Lotus, Socalled will be performing a new program of Yiddish song with an IU Jacobs School of Music string quartet featuring Guobjartur Hakonarson & Sofia Kim (violins), Andrew Collins (viola), and Marta Gudmundsdottir (cello).
