There are two Coil Binders and binding pliers available in the Music Library for student composers to use, located on a desk next to the window near but not inside the PED office. To get there go through the doors toward PED and straight ahead (don't turn right into the PED area). The work station is available during normal Music Library hours.
There are usually some coils available at the workstation for composers, provided by the composition department and PED; these are meant principally for scores. For parts, you should generally tape bind. Coil bound parts do not fit into musician's folders well – many professional orchestras prohibit coil and comb bound parts. If you think you need to coil bind a large set of parts or want to be sure of having the right size coil for your score, purchase your own coils.
NOTES:
- The Coil Binder on the left is newer and is for composer use. The one on right may be used as well.
- The letter size paper in between machines is for hole punch testing.
- Adjustments can be made for depth from edge and top of page.
- Be careful with dials and punch arm and please do not lose the pliers!
- This machine has a maximum punch of 17 sheets. If people punch beyond the maximum, it will wear out quickly.
- If you need help with binding, ask someone in PED for assistance.
- Only PED staff have access to the PED office and materials within.
- TAPE BINDING should be done with your own tape and not at this workstation.
COILS
- Buy 4:1 pitch coils that fit the machine at the Music Library. (4 holes per inch)
- Many online vendors sell these and you can find these approximate prices for black plastic coils.
- 6mm (1/4”) Black 4:1 Coil 100pk ~ 30 Sheets, $5.50 for 12”, or $20 for 36”
- 7mm (9/32”) Black 4:1 Coil 100pk ~ 42 Sheets, $6.50 for 12”, or $21 for 36”
- 8mm (5/16”) Black 4:1 Coil 100pk ~ 54 Sheets, $7.70 for 12”, or $23 for 36”
