Regulations for Departmental Concerto Competition
- Students entering String Department concerto competitions must be currently enrolled students in the Jacobs School of Music during the semester of the competition, and currently studying with a string department member.
- Such competing students must be currently enrolled in the orchestra program (any X040 election), with the exception of DM students, who do not have to be enrolled in X040.
- A teacher of record must enter any competing student. He/she must have the endorsement of that teacher to play and that endorsement must be sent to the chair of the department.
- Students in the Artist Diploma, Performer Diploma, DM, and all other degree programs in the Jacobs School of Music are eligible to compete. In the case of the DM student, if he/she should win the competition, the subsequent performance will fulfill the course requirement of the concerto recital (S613 – violin; S614 – viola; and S633 – cello).
- Previous winners of String Department concerto competitions are ineligible to reenter a String Department competition.
- Memorization is required of all competitors for all competitions. Exceptions to this rule will be determined by the department and communicated to the students and string faculty in a reasonable amount of time before the competition.
- For Departmental Competitions, there will be no more than six competitors. Should the number of initial competitors exceed six, a preliminary competition will be held by the instrumental faculty represented by the concerto, and within a reasonable time of the Departmental Competition. When concertos have performance times over 20 minutes, the appropriate string faculty will, by consensus, select cuts that will total a performance time of approximately 20 minutes for the Departmental Competition.
- The entire available departmental string faculty judges all String Department Competitions.
- The specific concertos are decided upon by the various string faculties during the spring semester prior to the academic year of the performances, and then sent to the Performance Coordinating Committee for incorporation into the Composite Calendar of the Jacobs School of Music.
