New students welcomed
This August, the music theory department welcomes new students into our MM and PhD programs!
New MM students:
Yanina Daniluk (Asunción, Paraguay) earned her BM from Universidad Nacional de Asunción and her areas of interest include 20th-century music, German lieder, post-tonal theory, undergraduate theory pedagogy and curriculum.

Lizhou Wang (Jiangxi Province, China) completed Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in musicology at Shanghai University, where he also studied music theory. His interests include classical forms, relations between musical structure and poetic expression in the romantic era, historical and pedagogical aspects of music theory, as well as theory of Chinese music. Other than music, Lizhou also enjoys translation, writing, photography and audio devices.
New PhD students:
Peter Cho (Saint John, New Brunswick) holds a BMus in viola performance from Memorial University of Newfoundland in St. John’s, Newfoundland. He is interested in set theory, Classical form, and new music. His hobbies include but are not limited to cooking, eating, reading outside, and wandering around aimlessly listening to music.
Thomas Cooke (Kings Mountain, NC) holds a BM in music theory from Furman University and a MM in music theory from Indiana University. His musical interests include microtonal music, Schenkerian analysis, twentieth century music, and anything related to Zappa or Parsifal. Outside of music, he enjoys hiking, reading classic novels, target shooting, fishing, and fancies himself to be an “amateur cigar nut.”
Mítia Ganade D'Acol (Ribeirão Preto, Brazil). Mítia completed a bachelor’s degree in music education and a master’s in musicology at the University of São Paulo. His interests include music communication, topic theory, and galant schemata. He also enjoys singing in choirs, baking bread, and backpacking.
David Orvek (St. David, Arizona) holds a B.S. in Music Theory and Literature from Southern Adventist University and an M.A. in Music Theory from The Ohio State University where he also taught first-year music theory and aural skills. His master’s thesis explored a generalized model of transformational voice leading and the algebraic structures at its heart. In addition to all things set-theory, his interests include 20th-century English music (the likes of E.J. Moeran, Herbert Howells, and many more), choral music, classical guitar, and computer programming.
Despoina Panagiotidou (Drama, Greece) completed her BA in applied music studies-music education at the University of Macedonia in Thessaloniki, Greece, and her MM in music theory at IU. Among her interests are twentieth-century art music in Greece, form, and music theory pedagogy. She enjoys long walks, literature, and going to concerts.
Anna Peloso (Simi Valley, CA) earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in percussion performance at California State University Northridge, and a certificate in audio engineering at Citrus College in Glendora, CA. She just completed her second master’s degree in music theory at Indiana University in Spring 2019 and is continuing at IU for the Ph.D. in music theory program. Anna has taught private percussion and piano lessons for many years, as well as aural skills courses at CSU Northridge. Her interests include jazz, music technology, electronic music, music and emotion, twentieth-century form, and pedagogy.
