When can I find out who my teacher is for the semester?
Private teacher assignments are emailed to you early in the first week of classes. It is your responsibility to get in touch with your instructor as soon as possible during the first week of classes, to ensure that you get all of your lessons for the semester.
Can I take the exam more than once?
You can take the exam as many times as you need to in order to pass. We want you to get your degree as much as you do.
Am I allowed to prepare only part of the exam, and pass it a little at a time?
No. You are expected to come to the exam with all items prepared. Students who come to the exam with some items not prepared will not be permitted to take the exam. The determination of what amounts to a "prepared" item is at the discretion of the examiner. (The only exception is for students whose degree requires open score components on the proficiency exam - for example, BME Choral Teaching students may pass the exam in parts, but not BME Instrumental students.)
How do I get practice time for my piano class?
You can practice for free in the practice rooms at the Jacobs School by showing up to the second or third floors of the Music Building Addition (round building) and using any empty, unlocked practice room (if somebody's name is on the door, it's not a practice room!). You can reserve practice times* at the Music Scheduling Site(you must be on-campus or connected to IU's VPN to access this link). You can practice in the dorms. You can practice in Greek houses. You can buy your own keyboard (make sure you get one that is touch-sensitive and has at least 61 keys, a pedal, and a power adapter).
* Non-music majors are subject to a Music Practice Room Rental fee. To view the current fee, go to http://tinyurl.com/h8vvruv (Links to an external site.) and search "practice room." The fee is $84.00 as of August 16, 2021.
How do I request a specific instructor before the semester starts?
If you register during your allotted registration period, you should receive a mailing before the semester begins, asking you to select an instructor. Alternatively, you can send mail to the Coordinator.
