Public Lecture or Defense Calendar
General information
Defenses and public lectures are held Monday through Friday during most of fall and spring semesters, generally in the Simon Music Center. Public Presentations may be done during the JSOM summer term if all who must attend are available. We encourage you to contact the Music Graduate Office by March 15 if you hope to hold a summer public presentation.
Defenses and public lectures will be scheduled in the following locations at the following times:
Fall 2024
- Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday 4–6:00 pm in SM267
- Wednesday 4–6:00 pm in SM285
- Friday 4:00-6:00 pm in SM350
Spring 2025
- Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday 4–6 pm in SM267
- Wednesday 4-5 pm in SM285
- Friday 4-6 pm in SM356
Lecture recitals are scheduled through the Recital Scheduling office (812-855-6000, recsched [at] iu [dot] edu).
Lectures and defenses ordinarily take place in-person at Indiana University Bloomington. Exceptionally, students may petition, after consulting with their committee and the Director of Graduate Studies, to have lectures and defenses administered online using videoconferencing software. This option is not open to lecture recitals, which must follow doctoral recital policies.
To schedule a defense or public lecture
You may schedule your defense or public lecture at the time your document is distributed to your research committee. The date of the public presentation must be at least two calendar weeks after the end of the committee's review period, which is six weeks from the date of distribution, excluding breaks.
Every member of the research committee must ordinarily be present in person at the public presentation. For the defense and lecture formats (only), students may petition, after consulting with their committee and the Director of Graduate Studies, to have lectures and defenses administered online using videoconferencing software. This option is not available for the lecture-recital.
To schedule your public presentation, review available dates on the calendar below. (If your preferred date is already taken, it is sometimes possible to schedule that date, provided a suitable room is available for scheduling, so feel free to ask, though it is better to find an open date.) Send an email to the Doctoral Clerk (musdoc [at] iu [dot] edu) to request that date. If you would like to schedule by phone, call the Music Graduate Office at 812-855-1739. The Doctoral Clerk in generally in the office Monday through Friday 9:00 am–noon.
Your reservation will be considered tentative and held for one week to give you time to confirm the date with the members of your Research Committee. Once they have agreed to the date, contact the Music Graduate Office to secure your reservations. If not all committee members are available, contact the Doctoral Clerk to reserve a new tentative date.
Current calendars
Months not shown on the calendar are not yet available for scheduling. Calendars for the next semester are usually posted around the middle of the current semester.

If a date and time on the calendar says "Public Presentation OPEN," then that time is available for scheduling. When you find a date on which you would like to hold your presentation, email the Doctoral Clerk (musdoc [at] iu [dot] edu) to request the date. If you see a student's name listed on your preferred date, you may still ask the doctoral clerk whether another location is available on that date.
