Each degree program has different recital requirements and procedures. Please see below for a summary of recital requirements for your degree. Please note that more detailed information can be found on the Scheduling Office page.
Undergraduate Degrees
Junior Recital
Students who have passed their Upper-Divisional Examination may schedule their Junior Recital. Junior Recitals typically take place during the sixth semester of P400-level lessons (Spring semester). Please consult the primary studio teacher on the readiness of the intended recital program prior to scheduling the recital.
Students must pass their recital hearing before they are eligible to give their recital. Hearings typically take place approximately two weeks or more before your recital. For Hearing sign-up procedures and policies, see the Hearings page.
Junior Recitals must be between 40-50 minutes in length. Repertoire is typically varied and should be consulted with the primary teacher. Repertoire must be music learned by the student during their degree study at the IU Jacobs School of Music and differ from one that was performed for the Freshman Jury and Upper-Divisional Exam.
Senior Recital
Students who have completed their Junior Recital may schedule their Senior Recital. Senior Recitals typically take place during the eighth semester of P400-level lessons (Spring semester).
Students must pass their recital hearing before they are eligible to give their recital. Hearings typically take place approximately two weeks before your recital. For Hearing sign-up procedures and policies, see the Hearings page.
Senior Recitals must be between 50-60 minutes in length. Repertoire is typically varied and should be consulted with the primary teacher. Repertoire must be music learned by the student during their degree study at the IU Jacobs School of Music and differ from one that was performed for the Freshman Jury, Upper-Divisional Exam, and Junior Recital.
Master's Degree
Master’s Recital
Master’s Degree piano students are required to give one Master’s Recital, which can take place anytime during their degree. Typically, this recital is given in their final (fourth) semester of P900 level lessons.
Students must register for their recital through the registrar (MUS-I711). Note that this is a zero-credit registration, but recital fees still apply.

Master’s Recitals must be between 50 and 60 minutes in length. Repertoire is typically varied and should be consulted with the primary teacher. Repertoire must be music learned by the student during their degree study at the IU Jacobs School of Music.
Performer Diploma
Performer Diploma Recital
Performer Diploma piano students are required to give one Performer Diploma Recital, which can take place anytime during their degree. Typically, this recital is given in their final (second) semester of P900 level lessons.
Students must register for their recital through the registrar (MUS-I611). Note that this is a zero-credit registration, but recital fees still apply.

Performer Diploma Recitals must be between 50 and 60 minutes in length. Repertoire is typically varied and should be consulted with the primary teacher. Repertoire must be music learned by the student during their degree study at the IU Jacobs School of Music.
Performer Diploma Recitals must be passed with a minimum grade of A-. The student’s primary teacher must be present in person at the recital performance.
Artist Diploma
Artist Diploma Recitals
Artist Diploma piano students are required to give three (3) I911 Artist Diploma Recitals, one of which must be a concerto, and one (1) I921 Artist Diploma Chamber Music Recital. These recitals can take place anytime during their degree.
Students must register for their recital through the registrar. Note that this is a zero-credit registration, but recital fees still apply. A pre-recital hearing is not required for Artist Diploma recitals.
Artist Diploma Recitals must be between 50 and 60 minutes in length. Repertoire is typically varied and is subject to approval by the student’s committee following any guidelines published by the department. Appropriate repertory for chamber music recitals is specified by departments. Recital repertory may not be repeated for diploma credit. Repertoire must be music learned by the student during their degree study at the IU Jacobs School of Music.
Artist Diploma recitals are attended and graded in person by the three members of a student’s AD committee. If a committee member (other than the student’s teacher) is unable to attend, they and the student must arrange for a substitute from inside or outside the major department, as appropriate.
All recital grades are reported in writing to the Director of Graduate Studies. A minimum grade of A- is required for PD and AD recitals.
Doctor of Music Degree
Doctor of Music Recitals
Doctor of Music piano students are required to give seven (7) Doctoral Recitals. These recitals can take place anytime during their degree. All recitals must be between 50-60 minutes in length, with the exception of P604 Doctoral Piano Recital-Final, which must be 60-75 minutes in length.
Students must register for their recital through the registrar prior to giving their recital. Once the recital is registered, the recital may be given for credit at any point thereafter. A pre-recital hearing is not required for Doctor of Music recitals.
Repertoire is typically varied and is subject to approval by the student’s committee members following any guidelines published by the department. Recital repertory may not be repeated. Repertoire must be music learned by the student during their degree study at the IU Jacobs School of Music.
Doctoral recitals are ordinarily attended and graded in person by the three members of a student’s doctoral advisory committee. The chair of the committee must hear the recital in person; exceptionally, in consultation beforehand with the committee chair and the student, a committee member may arrange for a departmental substitute, or to hear a recording of the recital.
All recital grades are reported in writing to the Director of Graduate Studies. A minimum grade of B is required for each Doctoral recital.
