General guidelines for the DM Minor at the Music Graduate Office
Entrance
Doctoral students interested in pursuing a minor in composition should submit a portfolio of completed works (pdf), list of compositions (pdf), and if possible, performance recordings (mp3) to the chair of the composition department, preferably in a folder shared via box.iu. Submitted scores should demonstrate a graduate (at least Master's) level of compositional craft, ability and experience. Scores and recordings will be evaluated by the composition faculty; an interview with the student may be requested. The requirements of the minor are as follows:
Courses
(A) 12 hours of K810, private composition lessons (preferably divided 3-3-3-3), with concurrent registration in I500 (0) Composition Masterclass in each semester of composition lessons.
or
(B) 10 hours of K810, private composition lessons (divided 3-3-2-2 or 3-3-4), and 2 hours of K551 (2; Orchestration), at the recommendation of the composition faculty; concurrent registration in I500 (0) Composition Masterclass in each semester of composition lessons or orchestration.
Performances
Public performance of three compositions (written while enrolled for K810), preferably on student composition recitals. The pieces will be graded pass/fail by a committee of at least three members of the composition faculty in attendance. The performance requirement is documented by students submitting signed copies of the relevant recital programs within two weeks after each performance to the Music Graduate Office for their files. The signature is to be by the student's teacher or the department chair and indicates department approval.
Examination
During the final semester of composition study, the student will be asked to compose: (1) a vocal work to an assigned text in a 24-hour period, and (2) a short movement for chamber ensemble in a 7-day period. Both pieces will be graded Pass/Fail by a committee of at least three members of the composition faculty. These exams will follow the procedures of the K702 and K703 documents, except that a specific committee is not put in place for minors.
