The Musicology Department, with the support from Jacobs School of Music Lecture Committee, the Russian and East European Institute, the Horizons of Knowledge Lecture Fund, and Russian Studies Workshop, presents a one-day conference and concert dedicated to Russian music in celebration of IU Jacobs School of Music Professor Emeritus Malcolm H. Brown’s ninetieth birthday.

Malcolm Hamrick Brown is widely seen as the father of Russian Studies in musicology. He was the first American musicologist to travel to the Soviet Union in the early years of the Thaw, to prepare his dissertation on the symphonies of Prokofiev (1967). He went on to publish several influential books on Shostakovich, Mussorgsky, and other topics in Russian music. He is also the founding editor of Russian Music Studies from Indiana University Press. Malcolm retired from IU in 1993 after thirty-one years on the School of Music faculty, most of them spent as chair of the Musicology Department.

The entire conference, including the keynote, will take place in Ford-Crawford Hall and the concert will take place in Auer Hall. Both are located in the Simon Music Center. There is no registration and the conference is free. If you are able to join us, however, please RSVP by Tuesday, September 24, so we can provide you with lunch and make sure to print enough programs.

We have established a fund in Malcolm’s honor. The Malcolm H. Brown Fellowship will be used to support a Ph.D. student in the Musicology Department at the Jacobs School of Music. Please consider giving now, or at any time in future via the “Give Now” button below.
