String Department Chamber Music Guidelines
F-450/F-550
1. All string players not in a preformed group must play a short audition between 3-5 minutes for the Pacifica Quartet during the first week of school.
a. The auditions will take place during the period when mandatory orchestra seating placement auditions take place.
b. The auditions are TBD.
c. This audition is for people who want to take chamber music F-450/F-550 and have no group, AND those who have a group but are missing a person or two to make the group complete.
2. Group sizes permitted by the String Department include trios of like or diverse instruments through nonets (Groups from 3-9 people).
a. String and Piano Sonatas are not considered chamber music for F450/F-550.
b. Duos are not considered chamber music for F-550.
3. Information about chamber music requirements based upon degree is available through theonline version of the Bulletin.

Woodwind Department Chamber Music Guidelines
F-450/F-550
1. All woodwind players and horn players who wish to be part of woodwind chamber music must play a short audition between 3-5 minutes for Professor Ludwig during the first week of school.
a. The auditions will take place during the period when mandatory orchestra seating placement auditions take place.
b. Exact time and location TBD and sent to students via email.
c. This audition is for people who want to take chamber music F450/F-550 and have no group, those who have a group but are missing a person or two to make the group complete, and full groups who have all the members but need a coach.
d. The audition results and gathered student information will be used to assist students with group formation for the year.
2. Group sizes permitted by the Woodwind Department include trios of like or diverse instruments through nonets (groups from 3-9 people).
a. Wind and Piano Sonatas are not considered chamber music for F450/F-550.
b. Duos of like or diverse instruments are considered chamber music for F450/F-550 only with the prior consent of the faculty coach.

Brass Department Chamber Music Guidelines
F-450/F-550
1. All brass players enrolling for chamber music credit (F-450/F-550) must meet with brass faculty in Recital Hall at 3:30 on Thursday of the first week of classes each semester. The meeting will is TBD
2. This meeting with faculty will:
- Confirm the members of those ensembles already formed
- Help complete the formation of ensembles who are still missing a member or two
- Help form groups for those who have no ensemble
- Designate a leader from each ensemble to lead the organization of a rehearsal schedule for the group and also schedule the coachings from the group’s faculty coach
3. Ensemble sizes permitted by the Brass Department include trios of like or diverse instruments through nonets (groups from 3-9 people).
4. Each ensemble must obtain the approval of a faculty member to act as the group’s coach. Each group must receive at least 7 coachings and perform in an IU venue (including master class).
5. While each ensemble must have a designated faculty coach to oversee the group and give the final grade, it is possible to divide the coachings between several faculty members. However, all faculty members involved must agree to this arrangement at the beginning of the semester.
6. It is possible that members of the Associate Instructor Brass Quintet may give several coachings to some undergraduate ensembles. This will be determined by the faculty coach of the ensemble.
7. In order to successfully track the progress of the ensemble and ensure that coaching sessions are evenly distributed throughout the semester, the designated leader of the group must keep track of the coachings and report this information to John Rommel (jrommel@indiana.edu) at the end of the fifth, tenth, and fifteenth weeks of the semester. The leader should also note who the coach was for these sessions.

Piano Department Chamber Music Guidelines
F-450/F-550
1. All piano players not in a preformed group may submit their name to Simin Ganatra, Head of Chamber Music, for consideration to be added to an existing chamber group.
2. Group sizes permitted by the Chamber Music Department include trios of like or diverse instruments through nonets (Groups from 3-9 people).
a. String and Piano Sonatas arenot considered chamber music for F450/F550.
b. Piano duos and piano four hands are considered chamber music for F550.
c. PD pianists may opt to collaborate with a string player for F550 credit. Please contact the Chamber Music Coordinator for more details.
