Program Note
A stranger trudging through a strange land. Water slowly leaves the body as a slough of sweat and desperation. Mirages become reality. Oases, rather than civilization, are the only goals. Sarcastic laughter is better than none at all.
Biography
Will Rowe (b. 1992) is a composer of classical music from Oxford, Michigan. Early into his compositional career, his works are receiving both professional and student performances in the US and in Europe. He is currently working on an M.M. in Composition at Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music as the Assistant Director of their New Music Ensemble (in which he also performs as the cellist), studying composition with Sven-David Sandström.
Will is a proud winner in the 2011 Annual BMI Student Composer Awards for his sonata for viola and piano, Snapping Cellophane. He is also the runner up in the 2011 League of Composers/ISCM Competition with The House on the Street, which also earned him the spot as Selected Composer for the League of Composers in the 2013 ISCM World New Music Days festival. Additionally, he is a recipient of the 2014 Dean’s Prize for Secessionist Subjects, which has been performed in the 2015 mise-en festival, and was a composer-in-residence at the Byrdcliffe Arts Colony in the summer of 2015.
