Oboe Study at the Jacobs School
We are happy to hear of your interest in the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music as you pursue your oboe studies. With one of the highest records of placement in the profession, the Jacobs School offers a program of unrivaled performance training and experience. Additionally, the Jacobs School is housed on a beautiful university campus, where our students have the opportunity to supplement their music studies with a wide range of academic classes. Students have found it an exciting place to be!
The Jacobs School offers oboe studies at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Our studio currently has 20 oboe majors. As focused oboe majors, students receive one private lesson each week. The lesson curriculum includes a study of scales, etudes, and solo and orchestral repertoire. The lessons are augmented by an oboe studio master class, reed classes, and orchestral and solo repertoire classes. Oboe students, therefore, work with us as their teachers up to four times a week.
All students have access to the exciting new Sirucek and Sharrow Reed Room which is professionally designed and fully equipped with all standard tools such as gouging machines and shaper tips, as well as oboe repair equipment. Other aspects of the IU oboe program include the weekly master class and orchestral repertoire classes taught by Linda Strommen and the specialized classes in English Horn taught by Roger Roe, English Horn and Assistant Principal Oboe with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra. We work as a team and are committed to each student’s personal and professional success. We delight in investing our energies toward this end! Our students share our vision of working toward excellence and artistry, and they share a spirit of generous support among themselves. It is rewarding to see their professional and personal successes.
Ensemble opportunities include five orchestras, a wind ensemble, two symphonic bands, a baroque and classical orchestra, new music ensemble, and a full chamber music program. Students have additional performing venues through the opera and ballet programs, student conductor orchestra, and touring, as well as many local professional orchestras. It is exciting to see that all students, from the freshman class through the graduate level, never lack opportunities for extensive performing experiences and exposure.
As a potential student, you may be interested in the scholarship opportunities that the Jacobs School offers. Merit scholarships are available for both undergraduate and graduate students and are determined primarily by the auditions. Associate Instructor positions and Graduate Assistantships are available on a competitive basis for graduate students. Additional scholarship information can be obtained by contacting the Office of Music Admissions and Financial Aid at the School of Music at (812) 855-7998, or via their website.
We are glad to hear of your interest in the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music and look forward to meeting you and hearing you play. Please feel free to contact us if we can be of further assistance to you.
