PREAMBLE
The name of this organization shall be American Choral Directors Association at
Indiana University
ARTICLE I: MEMBERSHIP
The membership of this organization shall be made up from among the students at
Indiana University who, because of their serious interest in the improvement of
choral music and the profession of the choral director, have chosen to become
members of the Indiana University Chapter of the American Choral Directors
Association.
“Participation in the proposed organization must be without regard to arbitrary
consideration of such characteristics as age, color, disability, ethnicity, gender,
marital status, national origin, race, religion, sexual orientation, or veteran status.”
ARTICLE II: UNIVERSITY COMPLIANCE
This organization shall comply with all Indiana University regulations, and local,
state and federal laws.
ARTICLE III: AFFILIATION AND CO-ORDINATION
This student chapter of the American Choral Directors Association is an integral part
of the National American Choral Directors Association, and shall be governed by the
professional and financial policies laid down in the National Constitution of the
American Choral Directors Association. Its official insignia shall be that of the
National American Choral Directors Association.
ARTICLE IV: PURPOSE
The purpose of this organization shall be those set forth in the National Constitution
of the American Choral Directors Association, and are stated as follows:
1. To foster and promote choral singing which will provide artistic and spirited
experiences for the participants
2. To foster and promote the finest types of choral music to make these
experiences possible. 3. To foster and encourage rehearsal procedures conducive to attaining the
highest level possible in musicianship and artistic performance.
4. To foster and promote the organization and development of choral groups of
all types in schools, colleges, and churches.
5. To foster and promote the organization and development of choral societies
in cities and communities.
6. To foster and promote the intelligent understanding of choral music as an
important medium of artistic expression and personal growth.
7. To foster and promote significant research in the field of choral music.
8. To foster and promote composition of superior quality in both music and text
for all choral combinations.
9. To cooperate with all organizations dedicated to the development of musical
culture in America and the world.
10. To disseminate professional news and information about choral music.
ARTICLE V: OFFICERS
The officers of this chapter of the American Choral Directors Association shall be:
President, Vice-President, Secretary, and Treasurer.
The duties of the President shall be: to preside at the meetings; to appoint
committees of the chapter; to represent this organization when necessary; and to
administer the policies as laid down in this constitution.
The duties of the Vice-President shall be: to preside at meetings when the President
is absent or incapacitated to perform the duties of the office; to assist in
administering the affairs of the chapter serving on such committees as are
designated in the By-Laws.
The duties of the Secretary shall be: to keep the records of membership; to record
the minutes of the meetings; to carry on the necessary chapter correspondence; and
to pass on to the secretary succeeding him/her all remaining records.
The duties of the Treasurer shall be: to keep a record of all financial matters
pertaining to this organization; to collect and preserve the chapter’s funds; to pay
out of the chapter’s funds the necessary and designated monies to meet the financial
obligations of the chapter; and to pass on to the treasurer succeeding him/her all
records and funds remaining in the treasury.
ARTICLE VI: ADVISOR
The duties of the Advisor shall be:
1. To support the goals and aims of the officers and membership
2. To attend meetings when needed 3. To serve as a faculty liaison to the University when deemed appropriate or
necessary by the officers.
ARTICLE VII: COMMITTEES
The committees of the American Choral Directors Association at Indiana University
shall be:
1. Program and Activities
2. Publicity
They duty of the Program and Activities Committee shall be to arrange for all
meetings and activities of the chapter and to designate time and place of the
meetings and activities, as provided for in the By-Laws.
The duty of the Publicity Committee shall be to arrange for publicity of any activities
or special features of chapter operations or any of its members in local and state
newspaper, on radio, or television.
In addition to these standing committees, the President may appoint special
committees to attend to and report upon any specific matter that it may become
necessary for this chapter to consider.
ARTICLE VIII: MEETINGS
Regular monthly meetings shall be held at such times and places as shall be
designated in the By-Laws.
Special meetings may be called by the President after consultation with and
approval of the other officers of the chapter.
The public may be invited to attend any regular or special meeting of this
organization.
ARTICLE IX: Dues
Each member will pay dues of five (5) dollars to the organization. These dues will be
collected when a member begins his/her affiliation with the organization. In
addition, each member is expected to maintain active membership with National
American Choral Directors Association.
ARTICLE X: AMENDING THE CONSTITUTION
The constitution of this organization may be amended by a two-thirds vote of the
membership at any meeting where a quorum is present: provided that notice of the
proposed amendment has been given at a previous meeting.
ARTICLE XI: ANTI-HAZING POLICY
Hazing is strictly prohibited. Hazing shall be defined as any conduct which subjects
another person, whether physically, mentally, emotionally, or psychologically, to
anything that may abuse, degrade, or intimidate the person as a condition of
association with a group or organization, regardless of the person’s consent or lack
of consent.
ARTICLE XII: PERSONAL GAIN CLAUSE
Personal Gain Clause: This organization shall ethically raise and distribute profits
from organizational functions to either the organization or to members who provide
a service that directly benefits the organization. Individual members may not
receive compensation directly from for-profit companies if acting as a
representative of a student organization.
