General information
The Written minor field exam in music theory follows different procedures.
There are two written exam sessions each day, each lasting 3 hours and 50 minutes.
The morning session is 8:00-11:50 am and is indicated as AM on the calendars below.
The afternoon session is 1:00-4:50 pm and is indicated as PM on the calendars below.
Major field exams last two full sessions and require both the AM and PM sessions on the same day.
Minor-field exams require one session, either morning or afternoon.
The exams are held in the Music Graduate Office (JS120).
To schedule a written exam
First, read information on the requirements and procedures.
Once you are eligible to schedule a written exam, review available dates on the calendars below. Keep in mind you must schedule your exam at least three weeks (not including breaks) from the current date to allow time for faculty to write the text of the exam. When you find a date on which you would like to schedule, email the Doctoral Clerk (musdoc@iu.edu) to request the date. If you would like to schedule by phone, please call the Music Graduate Office at 855-1739. If you would like to talk to the Doctoral Clerk in person, she will generally be in the Music Graduate Office Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to noon.
To schedule a written exam in JSoM summer session, you must contact the Music Graduate Office by April 1.
Calendars
These online calendars are kept as up-to-date as possible, but please keep in mind that a date you request might have been requested by another student by the time you contact the Graduate Office.
New exam dates are opened on a regular schedule. Every two weeks, two more weeks of exam dates are opened for scheduling.
Open the WRITTEN EXAM calendar.
If a date and time on the calendar says "Written Exam OPEN," then that time is available for you to schedule (as long as someone doesn't schedule it before you).
If the date and time on the calendar says "Busy," then that time has already been reserved for another student.
When you find a date on which you would like to take your exam, email the Doctoral Clerk (musdoc@iu.edu) to request the date. The calendar is opened on a rolling basis, so only the dates that are currently available for scheduling show as OPEN on the calendar. More dates will be opened up as the semester progresses.
