IU E-mail and Computer Accounts
How to set up your IU e-mail and computer accounts
Before you arrive for new student orientation, please set up your personal IU computer and e-mail accounts.
For most students, once you have your Indiana University ID number, you can set up your IU e-mail and computer accounts. We suggest you do this before you arrive for graduate new student orientation. You should find your IU ID number at the bottom of your letter of admission to the Jacobs School of Music. If your ID number is not listed, please contact the Music Admissions office at 812-855-7998 or email them at musicadm [at] iu [dot] edu.
Some students (in particular international students, but also some domestic students) will not be able to set up these accounts until a few weeks before orientation (sometimes the university records system is not updated with some new students until that time). Therefore, if you are not able to set up your accounts on your initial attempt, please try again a few weeks before orientation. If you try shortly before orientation and are still not able to set up your account, please email musgrad [at] iu [dot] edu and we will try to assist you.
Please complete this step before you arrive for new student orientation.
To create and activate your IU e-mail and computer accounts, go to One.iu.edu and search for "Create My First IU Account" from any computer with Internet access. Click on the app that has that same name in the results.
Detailed instructions are available here: IU Knowledge Base.
At the end of the process you will have an IU Network ID and passphrase (used to log on to IU computers), and an IU e-mail account. It will take approximately 15 minutes to complete. Be sure to write down/remember your IU username and passphrase. You will use these for accessing your IU e-mail account, logging in to IU computers, and for registration.
The Music Graduate Office often needs to send important notices and reminders to graduate students, and to do this we usually use e-mail. E-mail is considered an official form of communication by Indiana University, and it is each student's responsibility to regularly check your IU e-mail accounts. You can set your IU e-mail account up so that it is automatically forwarded to another account (such as gmail).

About IU e-mail
Official university e-mail accounts are available for all registered students. The university reserves the right to send official communications to you by e-mail with the full expectation that you will receive and read these emails in a timely fashion.
As a student, you are expected to check your e-mail on a frequent and consistent basis in order to stay current with university-related communications. By doing so, you also avoid going over your e-mail quota and missing important e-mail message.
NOTE: If you choose to have your e-mail forwarded from your official University email address to another address, you do so at your own risk.
The university is not responsible for any difficulties that may occur in the proper or timely transmission or access to e-mail forwarded to any other address, and any such problems will not absolve students of their responsibility to know and comply with the content of official communications sent to their official IU e-mail addresses.
