DM in Composition and Doctoral Minor in Composition: K702 (7 day) and K703 (24 hour) Exams

K702 Doctoral Composition Document I (0 cr.) Movement of chamber music written during a week-long examination period.

K703 Doctoral Composition Document II (0 cr.) Setting of a given text during a 24-hour period.

Doctoral composition majors enroll in K702 and K703 and complete these requirements during their first two semesters of enrollment. For DM Composition majors, these documents fulfill the major field written qualifying examination requirement.

For doctoral composition minors, these requirements serve as the written minor field qualifying exam in composition and are done either near the end of coursework or after coursework is completed. Minors do not enroll in K702-3, however.

Following is the procedure for completing the 7-day (K702) and 24-hour (K703) pieces. The procedure differs in a few places for [Majors] and [Minors], as indicated.

1. [Majors] Set up the major field Advisory Committee by reading this information on Advisory Committees and completing an Advisory Committee request form.
2. [Minors] Formally declare your minor field representative in Composition prior to starting the exam.
3. Tell the Music Graduate Office what date and time you want to begin your K702 or K703 exam. This should be done at least 3 weeks in advance, or by March 15 if you plan to do the K702 or K703 exam in the summer. The exam may begin on any day on which the graduate office schedules written qualifying exams. This is ordinarily during the fall and spring semesters, excluding the first week of classes and final exam week, and during the portion of the summer term during which the Jacobs School of Music is primarily in session. To see if you can begin the exam on a given date, visit the Written Exam Calendar. You may begin the exam on dates with an entry (usually "busy," "Written Exam OPEN," or "Written Exam NOT YET AVAILABLE"); you may not begin the exam on dates that are blank. There are no restrictions on the ending date.
4. The Music Graduate Office will request the exam from the Advisory Committee chair [majors] or minor field representative [minors]. The exam will include instructions on the expected format of the final project.
5. The Music Graduate Office will email you the exam text at the agreed-upon date and time. If you want to start the exam earlier than you originally planned, please contact the Music Graduate Office to make sure the exam is ready. If you want to start later than you originally planned, just let the Music Graduate office know about the change. When the exam is emailed to you, you will be informed of the date and time the exam needs to be returned. Exams must start during regular office hours for the Music Graduate Office (9:00 am–12 pm, 1:00–4:00 pm, Monday through Friday).
6. Submit your completed exam by the 24-hour or 7-day deadline to musgrad [at] indiana [dot] edu (musgrad at indiana.edu). A completed exam includes two files: 1) A PDF of the score that includes the given exam text as the first page; 2) an mp3 MIDI realization of the composition.
7. The Music Graduate Office will send the exam to your committee [majors] or minor field representative [minors] for grading.
8. [Majors] Each committee member will email their grades to the Music Graduate Office. The grades will be averaged and a final grade assigned. The Music Graduate Office will send you an e-mailwith the final grade once we have the results from each member of your committee. A copy of this e-mail is sent to the chair of the Advisory Committee. 
9. [Minors] The minor field representative will return the exam result to the Music Graduate Office. The Music Graduate Office will send you an email once we have the exam result.  
10. Your Advisory Committee Chair [majors] or minor field representative [minors] will go over the graded exam copy with you.
11. [Majors] The major field written qualifying examination in composition is satisfied with the successful completion of K702 and K703.
12. [Minors] The minor field qualifying exam in composition is considered complete once both the 7-day and 24-hour pieces are officially recorded as passed.
